Leather Journals - An introduction to bookbinding
During the course of this workshop you will learn and use simple bookbinding techniques to make both a hardback notebook and a hand sewn leather journal. (Please note that a non-leather option is available, please let us know any preference at time of booking).
Starting with the hardback notebook you will learn how to use board, decorative papers and book cloth in conjunction with the basic stitch of bookbinding, the pamphlet stitch, to bind the pages together. For a professional finish you will attach the casing for the book to the booklet using decorative end papers.
For the leather journal you will make several sections of papers, prep your leather for stitching, and attach the papers to the leather using a longstitch. You will have a choice of fastening, which can include a simple tie fastening, a decorative elastic fastening or a riveted tie fastening.
All materials are provided and all students will leave with a beautiful completed notebook and a fantastic leather journal, as well as the skills to be able to do it again at home.

She has been bookbinding for 8 years and has previously been awarded the Society of Bookbinders Gordon Hartley Memorial Bursary to enable me to pursue bookbinding as a career. She loves working with paper as a medium, and experimenting with other materials and techniques.
