Carolyn Forster

Talented quilter & experienced tutor

“I’m a quilt designer, teacher and author from Tunbridge Wells in Kent. Since self-publishing my first book”Quilting On the Go’ I’ve gone on to write ten more patchwork an quilting books with Search Press in the UK and Landauer publishing in the USA.

I’ve been a regular project contributor for magazines in the UK, including Todays Quilter, as well as abroad. I was the BOM designer during 2018/19 for Todays Quilter, creating a hand pieced sampler using my popular quilt as you go technique.”

Carolyn Forster

“My quilts are an eclectic mix of fabrics, a posh way to say I make scrappy quilts, and they always have their roots from some point in the past, being inspired by quilt makers who have gone before us.

Accessibilty is my key philosophy with my teaching, demystifying techniques to allow every quilter to discover their own voice.

Teaching at Made and Making lets me dip into teaching lots of different techniques including versions of QAYG and big stitch quilting and hand piecing.”

Carolyn Forster Siddi Quilt

“The Kawandi Quilt class was a great opportunity to introduce people to a little known but fascinating technique of quilt making from the Siddi people living in India.

Quilts are stitched and quilted with the same motion and the patches are laid in position as you come to them. There is very little ahead planning in this process, it being very organic.

The class was a new way of quilting to many, and to me when I first discovered it.

There is always still so much to discover with quilt making, and the studio at Made and Making is a great place to share.”

japanese reversible patchwork

This technique has endless possibilities.

The end result is a reversible quilt, achieved through finishing the edges before they are sewn together.

In our workshop you’ll learn to use hexagons but the same knowledge can be applied to diamonds, triangles and circles wrapped around squares. A perfect ‘scrappy’ project.

siddi quilts

Originally, Siddi or Kawandi quilts were made to be slept on in hot weather, or under in the cooler monsoon season.

They are  traditionally  made using a sari base with appliqued patches of fabric built up on top, from a corner, the outside edges or the centre.

It’ a beautifully gradual and mindful technique.

In our workshop you’ll learn the skills you need to make a mini quilt with what is essentially a ‘quilt as you go’ method. You will be sewing the patches to a backing and lining with the quilting stitches.

manx log cabin

Say goodbye to wadding! The gorgeous texture in this quilt is created by the folds that form in the logs as you sew.

An entirely hand pieced quilt, with the sizes of each piece dependent on the maker’s own hands.

In our workshop you will learn both the hand technique and Carolyn will demonstrate how the technique can be modified for machine sewing.

Originating from Isle of Man, this is a totally different kind of quilting to any you’ve done before.
