Have you had a good week? Mine has been full of dog walks with the youngest before she finally heads back to Uni combined with work and lots of destashing ready for the sale.
I’ve come to the conclusion that destashing may be best done under pressure. The tight deadline means that decisions have to be quick, decisive and are thus instinctive. Yes, I bought it. Yes, I intended to use it. Yes, I know what to do with it and I can do it. BUT… if it’s been in my cupboard for more than a year am I really going to get joy from doing it. If we are all completely honest most of us prioritise in life the things that bring us most joy. We might wait until a Friday evening for a take away or save our favourite chocolate bar for the night on the sofa but we don’t stash it for a year before eating it. So I am being super ruthless.
So, as a taster the things that I’m clearing out include dressmaking patterns and fabric yardage (purchased cuts that I have yet to use and not sure I will in the next few years as I just don’t find the time). There are woollens and viscose and cottons. There are patchwork precuts (layer cakes, jelly rolls and fat quarter bundles) and bags of wadding offcuts. Yarn and wool tops for felting and arm knitting. Various random crafty bit and bobs no longer needed, ends of kits etc. There are ribbons, trims, bags of leather offcuts and books. I’ve accumulated a lot because I am such a keen do-er.
There is something about trusting your instincts that I find comforting. And, as someone I know always says, “You can only make a decision based on what you know at the time” or words to that effect. So don’t look back and judge yourself harshly for getting it wrong if you did your best. And, when I undoubtedly regret getting rid of something, that I later wish I hadn’t, I will repurchase it and remind myself that of all the bits I did clear out that one thing is not the end of the world to replace.
