Happy Scrappy Quilt course
The Happy Scrappy quilt is the perfect project for someone new to patchwork or for someone who wants to build their skills and is a fabulous way of using your stash!
The Happy Scrappy is a ‘quilt as you go’ project with the finished quilt having twelve 12″ blocks. Being ‘quilt as you go’ it makes it much more beginner friendly as it removes the challenge of getting a whole quilt top through your machine. When completed it will have an approximate finished size of 40″ x 53″ but you could of course make it any size by duplicating or adding more blocks of your own.
If you’re looking for a monthly club to join for some creative fun where there is not too much pressure this might be the thing for you. Each month there will be 2 blocks to make with additional sessions for quilting, joining and finishing off.

What will we cover?
You will learn accurate cutting using how to safely use a rotary cutter and patchwork ruler and how to sew patchwork with a 1/4″ presser foot.
The blocks are all machine pieced and you will have the choice of machine or hand quilting. We will look at a variety of options and designs for your quilting and it will be a great chance to try a range of options.
In each block there are traditional patchwork techniques to master such as half square triangles and flying geese and as we undertake each block we will share with you the relevant tips and tricks to help create the best results.
How will I be taught?
You’ll be taught in our lovely studio by a friendly and experienced tutor, through demonstration and guidance as you work.
You’ll also be able to ask questions, making sure everything is clear and that you’re getting the best results you can.
Do I need any previous experience or skills?
This course is suitable for a patchwork beginner but you are expected to be familiar with a sewing machine. Please note that you will need access to a sewing machine at home as there is some sewing that needs to be done between sessions.
Are materials provided? Is there anything I need to source myself?
You can bring your own sewing machine to the sessions or you are welcome to use one of ours.
FABRIC REQUIREMENTS
Of course, it is up to you whether you use up your scraps (if you have some) or you buy some fabric to make the blocks with. You will need:
- approximately 9 fat quarters (or scrappy equivalent!) of fabric in a range of contrasting colours/patterns
- Reel of 100% cotton thread in a neutral colour (light grey/beige)
You will need additional fabric for the sashing of the blocks and the back of the quilt as well as the wadding. These will be discussed within in the first few sessions so that you can make good choices which will enhance your finished quilt.
Quilt rulers and rotary cutters are provided during your session but you will also need to purchase a rotary cutter, pathwork ruler and cutting mat to complete your homework. We recommend the Creative Grids which can be found at:

“The first session of my happy scrappy quilt making course has left me full of enthusiasm for the rest of the course. Sarah is so knowledgeable and keen to share her tips on patchwork and sewing in general. I have learnt so much already, and Sarah makes it a lot of fun. Despite going on my own, the rest of the group were very welcoming and I feel that we will have plenty to chat about at the next session. There is no pressure to be perfect and we can take things at our own individual pace. I thoroughly recommend these sessions.”

“I am doing the sampler quilt and it is just amazing. I love everything about it and will be sorry when it’s finished. Will definitely be looking to improve my skills with Made and Making. Just fantastic.”
Teresa
“I have been on the beginners course to learn some new skills . The course is really well structured with so much to learn, but broken down into manageable chunks… I will definitely keep going with this now that I have started.
The workroom is lovely with lots of inspiration all around you in the form of pieces of sewing, quilting, crochet etc… examples of some of the things you can learn. It’s a lovely place to learn so many crafts.
Sarah is a very good teacher with clear instructions and examples of what I was supposed to be doing… and with ideas to rectify any less than perfect ‘sewing ‘ from me. I have nearly finished my sample quilt and am very happy with the results. Would absolutely recommend Made and Making…it’s a great place to learn and I have already signed up for another course.”
