Have you ever tried patchwork? Dabbled with some simple blocks and really enjoyed it? Attempted some blocks on your own but not been happy with the results? This course will give you all the insight, tips and tricks you need to create great patchwork and learn the essentials of quilting. Not sure patchwork is for you? It can be simple or complicated, traditional or modern, there really is a style to suit everyone.

In this introductory beginners patchwork course you will learn all the basic skills of patchwork and quilting and make a beautiful sampler quilt. Work with curated bundles effortlessly harmonising your scheme or use it as a chance to build your own bundle and play with colour and pattern.

What will we cover?

Over the course of your sessions we will show you how to work successfully with a rotary cutter and cutting mat. You will learn a variety of patchwork techniques including machine piecing, English paper piecing, appliqué, foundation piecing, hand and machine quilting and binding.

A quilt as you go technique is used for this course so you quilt each 12″ block before you join them together. This makes the quilting much easier for a beginner and avoids the need to feed a large quilt through your machine for quilting.

Each class will guide you through a number of techniques that you will work on in the class and then continue with at home. You will make 12 12” blocks in the following 10 designs together with 2 foundation pieced ones to make a 40” x 53” quilt.

How will I be taught?

You’ll be taught in our lovely studio by a friendly and experienced tutor, through demonstration and guidance as you work.

You’ll also be able to ask questions, making sure everything is clear and that you’re getting the best results you can.

If for any reason you are unable to make a session you will be given access to video classes covering what you have missed. If you would like access to the full range of video classes for this course this can be purchased for £30, just let us know at your first session.

Do I need any previous experience or skills?

This is a beginner’s patchwork course but you are expected to be familiar with a sewing machine. Please note that you will need access to a sewing machine at home as there is some sewing that needs to be done between sessions.

Are materials provided? Is there anything I need to source myself?

You can bring your own sewing machine to the sessions or you are welcome to use one of ours.

FABRIC REQUIREMENTS

8 fat quarters of 100% cotton coordinating fabrics – a mixture of dark, medium and light tones.
1m background fabric that coordinates with your patchwork fabric. This will form the background for some of the appliqué blocks.
Backing fabric (for the back of the quilt) and cotton wadding are also required but this will be discussed in week one.
Reel of 100% cotton thread in a neutral colour (light grey/beige)

Quilt rulers and rotary cutters are provided during your session but you will also need to purchase a rotary cutter, pathwork ruler and cutting mat to complete your homework. We recommend the Creative Grids which can be found at:
