Block Printing

block printed cushion workshop

In this workshop you will be introduced to the traditional craft of printing onto fabric using hand-carved Indian woodblocks. Choosing from Sarita’s extensive collection of blocks you will be guided in how to apply paint to the block and make a good clear print. There will then be time to practice and experiment printing onto paper using a variety of blocks to perfect your technique. Sarah will give the group suggestions and examples for laying out a repeat pattern and design. There will be time to experiment and formalise your chosen design layout on a paper template before you progress to printing it onto a cream cotton 50x50cm cushion cover.

What will we cover?

You will learn how to make a clear print using pre-carved Indian woodblock stamps, including applying the paint correctly and having the most effective surface to print on. You will be introduced to ideas around print layout, repeat pattern printing and how to create a harmonious design using different blocks and shapes.

After a demonstration and watching the tutor you’ll have time to experiment with the blocks printing on paper and choosing your preferred design layout. Once you are happy and confident with it you will move on to printing it onto the fabric cushion cover.

By the end of the workshop you will have printed your design onto a 50x50cm cushion cover that you can iron at home (to heat set the fabric paint) and insert a cushion insert pad at home or buy suitable sized one from tutor on day (see below).

How will I be taught?

Teaching takes place in a light and spacious studio. Full demonstration will be given at each stage of the printing process and guidance and support as you work.

Do I need any previous experience or skills?

Suitable for complete beginners as well as those with an interest in textile art and printing.

Are materials provided? Is there anything I need to source myself?

All equipment and paint and blocks will be provided to print with and a cotton cushion cover will be provided to print on. If you would like to buy a feather cushion pad insert that fits the 50x50cm cover you can purchase separately from the tutor on day (£12).

We recommend you bring an apron as we will be printing using a type of fabric paint.
