Create your own Body Double workshop – new date

body double workshop

Do you invest time and effort in dressmaking but find it tricky getting the right fit. You’ve got a dressmakers buddy but it isn’t really your shape. You NEED a body double,  a form that truly reflects you.

This is the chance to create a body form that means that, when your clothes fit the form, they are going to fit you just as well too. It makes dressmaking on your own so much easier. It means you don’t have to stand and be pinned by someone, or even find someone to help you pin!

You’ll be wondering how you ever got by without one and why you persevered with a shop bought dummy that has your measurements but not your shape.

We are delighted to have sewing guru Wendy Gardiner visiting us to help. Wendy has sewing in her blood. She’s published multiple books, tutored, been on sewing related TV channels and so much more.

What will we cover?

After taking accurate body measurements Wendy will show you how to turn an adjustable dress form into your personal body double so that you can easily make garments that fit you perfectly every time. Using an adjustable dress form means you can alter it should your weight change too!

After making the body double you will make a test garment to make sure the dimensions are correct

How will I be taught?

You will be taught in our lovely studio by the very experienced Wendy so you will be in very safe hands.

Do I need any previous experience or skills?

No specific skills or experience needed that you wouldn’t already have if you have an interest in sewing. Wendy will show you everything you need to do in clear steps.

Are materials provided? Is there anything I need to source myself?

You will need:

Adjustable dress form – choose one that fits your smallest measurement (you can pad it but you can’t make it smaller). A ‘leg dress form’ means you can also use it for making trousers.

A bra that fits you – preferably a full cup one (if not, fabric remnants to make cup fully covered)

1.5-2m polyester wadding

Dressform cover – buy a larger size than the dress form so it will fit over the padded form. Alternatively a slip from M&S or similar that can be turned into a cover (Wendy will show you how)

String or narrow ribbon to fit around waist

Chalk marker

Good tape measure

Notebook and pen

Plenty of pins

Pack of 6mm wide Quilters tape or 5m of 6mm wide ribbon (this will be used to wrap around the final dress form at waist, hips, bust etc)

Box of cling film

To test your body double:

Your choice of simple pattern, fabric and haberdashery for dress, skirt or top to test out the body double dimensions

Pattern paper (or can be purchased on the day)

Scotch tape

Sewing machine and sewing kit

Please also bring leggings or thick opaque tights and a slim fit t-shirt to wear when taking body measurements.

A dress or blouse and skirt that fit you, to check the body double is the right size for you once adjusted and padded

What will I take home with me?

A body double dress form that is exactly the same dimensions as you!

Refreshments

Drinks and biscuits will be available but we recommend that you bring a packed lunch with you.

Photography

During all of our workshops photographs are taken for promotional purposes only. Please make us aware at the time of booking if you would prefer not to be included.
