Festive block printing
Join local block print artist Sarita Prints Joy to spend a relaxed few hours immersed in the traditional craft of wood block printing. You will be led through the process of printing using hand-carved wooden block, learning how to build pattern and layer colour enjoying the rhythm of making by hand.. After time practice printing on paper (and printing set of 4 Christmas cards to keep) you will print your chosen design and layout onto a cotton tea towel.
All the wood blocks have been hand carved by Indian artisans, some from Sarita’s own drawn designs. We shall be using woodblocks with Christmas themes and winter botanical inspiration. Your tea towel can also be personalised with a printed name or festive word using carved alphabet blocks which make them a perfect gift.
What will we cover?
* How to apply the paint to the block using a sponge dibber
* Time to enjoy practice printing on paper and print 4 Christmas cards that you can take home with you.
* Learn different ways to print a repeat pattern
* Use different blocks in harmony to create a varied design
* Use carved alphabet block letters to print a name or word (Ideal if wanting to personalise your tea towel)
By the end of the workshop you will have printed your design onto a cotton tea towel and 4 Christmas cards.
How will I be taught?
Teaching takes place in a light and spacious studio. Full demonstration will be given at each stage of the printing process and guidance and support as you work.
Do I need any previous experience or skills?
Suitable for complete beginners as well as those with an interest in textile art and printing.
Are materials provided? Is there anything I need to source myself?
All equipment, paint, paper and blocks will be provided as well as a white cotton tea towel.
We recommend you bring an apron as we will be printing using a type of fabric paint.
What will I take home with me?
By time you have finished printing you will take home a completed tea towel plus the practice paper and beautiful cards you will have practiced on.

Tutor
Sarah is a passionate block print artist who has honed her skills in woodblock printing and now shares her love for the craft through group workshops. She is an accredited tutor with the Indian Woodblock Print Co. in Oxfordshire, having completed their certification course to deepen her expertise. Sarah finds joy in inspiring others to explore the art of woodblock printing and loves the fact that it is very accessible to all regardless of printing experience. Sarah has a bold eye for colour and this is expressed through the palette of paint colours she offers her group to print with.
