Festive Mini quilts with Julia Gahagan
We are delighted to have the talented mini quilt designer and maker Julia Gahagan coming to the studio to share her expertise with us.
In this workshop you will design and create your very own mini quilt picture using a technique called shadow appliqué and quilting. There will be a choice of design to stitch and you will make a small sample and then move on to your final piece.
This is a fun, achievable project, suitable for all levels of stitcher including beginners. It’s also a great way to use up those fabric scraps and would make a perfect gift.
A sheer, transparent fabric needed for this technique will be supplied. For other materials you need to bring please see below
Your finished mini quilt will be vary in size depending on the design that you do but are smaller than A4.
What you will need
A sheer, transparent fabric needed for this technique will be supplied. For other materials you need to bring please see below:
Basic sewing equipment suitable for working with small pieces of fabric; small pins, small share scissors and spare tweezers if you have them.
A fabric glue pen such as Sewline or Sew Easy. There will be some available to buy on the day.
2 pieces of ultra thin wadding (9″x 12″ and 5′ x 7′) note polyester wadding is not suitable. Julia will have thin wadding to buy
Co-ordinating sewing machine threads
A free-motion or open toe appliqué foot for your sewing machine if you have one.
A fat quarter of plain background fabric, white or cream works best.
A fat quarter of backing fabric
A selection of very small scale patterned festive fabrics for your designs. Try to include a mix of light, dark and medium colours that co-ordinate. You don’t need large quantities, approx 8″ squares. Why not bring a bag of scraps, you might find something useful once you start work on your design. If you wish to make the Festive Song pattern with the two robins then you will need small pieces of light and dark brown, red and green.
Binding fabric – at least 12″ x 8″
