Improv patchwork tote bag

improv tote bag workshop

Have you ever wanted to try Improv? Come and enjoy a fun day of experimentation learning some of the techniques involved in this very creative, free-form method of patchwork.

The wonderful thing about improv is breaking all the rules and going with the flow. For some of us that might be a bit harder but relax into it and it results in a very free flowing and creative way of working. Every piece will always be unique as you are banishing the measuring and all the rulers… you are piecing your patchwork in a very organic manner.

Have you  been thinking about the 6 week Improv Sampler Course but not been sure? This is your chance to try before you buy – come along and play for a day to find out. Due to its free play way it can become incredibly addictive!

What will we cover?

This workshop is at an introductory level so no prior knowledge is assumed. We will cover some basic techniques to give you an introduction to improv patchwork.

How will I be taught?

You will be taught in our light and airy studio by our friendly and experienced tutor. There are no silly questions!

Do I need any previous experience or skills?

Not all all! This workshop is suitable for complete beginners. We only ask that you are familiar with a sewing machine so that you can focus your time on learning the content for this particular workshop.

Are materials provided? Is there anything I need to source myself?

For the lining: A piece of fabric 14” by 28”

For the Improv bag: To make something similar to the pictures, bring two half metres (or 4 fat quarters) in two contrasting colours. If you want to make something with more variety, just bring an equivalent amount of fabric – plain, striped, spotty or floral or all of the above! – it’s up to you.

Bring a neutral thread for the piecing and an appropriately coloured thread for the top stitching when finishing the bag.

A rotary cutter if you have one.

What will I take home with me?

A useful tote bag made from your own unique piece of improv patchwork.

Drinks and biscuits will be available but we recommend that you bring a packed lunch with you.

During all of our workshops photographs are taken for promotional purposes only. Please make us aware at the time of booking if you would prefer not to be included.
