Knitting – Introduction to colour work
This course is the ideal introduction to colourwork knitting. Taught by Annah O’Leary, colourwork enthusiast and former Textiles teacher, this half-day course will cover the must-knows when it comes to working with both traditional and modern colourwork patterns.
From simple Fair Isle motifs, to more complicated imagery, you’ll leave this course confident in how to select colours, yarn, and patterns to create stunning colourwork knitting.
What will we cover?
Colourwork is a style of knitting, sometimes called Fair Isle or stranded knitting, where more than one colour is used in each row. Using this technique, along with simple knit and purl stitches, complex and intricate patterns can be created.
In addition to learning how to read charts and knit them, you’ll also learn how to select colours to make your patterns stand out, tips and tricks for emphasising certain stitches, how to manage working with multiple yarns, and much more.
How will I be taught?
You’ll be taught in our lovely studio by a friendly and experienced tutor, through demonstration and guidance as you work.
You’ll also be able to ask questions, making sure everything is clear and that you’re getting the best results you can.
Do I need any previous experience or skills?
This workshop is suitable for those confident in knitting and purling.
Are materials provided? Is there anything I need to source myself?
Please bring DK or Aran weight yarn in a variety of colours, and needles to match your yarn size.
What will I take home with me?
One to two knitted samples, as well as a printed workbook to make sure you remember the essentials!

Tutor
Pattern Knits’ designer, Annah, has a passion for colour and pattern. This is evident patterns that she designs - with inspiration taken from nature, architecture and geometric patterns. Small, bitesized squares become stunning, large scale blankets as well as beautifully intricate cowls and cushions. These designs are suited to a huge range of yarn weights, styles and ability levels. Having previously trained as a teacher, and worked teaching Textiles to GCSE level, Annah prides herself on clear, easy to follow instructions and patterns that inspire and inform.
