What will we cover?

In this workshop local artist Ellie Hipkin will lead you on a path to creating a beautiful layered seascape piece with both interest and depth.

The layered seascape is created using printed fabrics layered onto a cotton rag paper. Depth and interest is developed by adding some textured printing and monoprinting using real plants and seedheads. You will then add further detail with free-motion embroidery, using the seedheads and grasses as inspiration. (No real sewing exercise needed).

The cotton rag paper is a lovely medium and works well for for free motion embroidery because it is made from cotton pulp not wood pulp. It is a beautiful paper to work with.

If you worry that you are not artistic and couldn’t possibly achieve something, you really must come. With the guidance and support of Ellie this workshop will inspire you to create textile art with a mixed media approach. You’ll leave feeling much more confident combining different materials, printing, and embroidery together to create your own unique piece of art.

How will I be taught?

You’ll be taught in our lovely studio by a friendly and experienced tutor, through demonstration and guidance as you work.

You’ll also be able to ask questions, making sure everything is clear and that you’re getting the best results you can.

Do I need any previous experience or skills?

No experience needed.

Are materials provided? Is there anything I need to source myself?

Ellie will provide all materials needed, but you may wish to bring some fabrics to use in your seascape collage. Any plain or printed cotton in blues/ greens would work to bring interest and texture to your piece.

What will I take home with me?

Your own pieces of unique textile art and a feeling of creative inspiration.

Drinks and biscuits will be available but we recommend that you bring a packed lunch with you.

During all of our workshops photographs are taken for promotional purposes only. Please make us aware at the time of booking if you would prefer not to be included.

Ellie Hipkin

Ellie fell in love with textile art at school and was drawn back to it after 15 years studying and working in fashion design. Inspired by the calming power of nature on the South Downs and the Sussex coastline, Ellie paints directly onto raw canvas, cottons and silks. She uses natural finds gathered on family walks - such as grasses, seed heads and feathers - to add monoprinting effects, then uses free motion embroidery to add a final layer of texture and detail. Ellie loves sharing these skills in her textile art courses. She sells her own artwork through and runs Flourish Textile Art hub at
