What will we cover?

On this leather bag making course, you’ll learn the essential skills you need and some nifty tips and tricks. Working with leather is very different to fabric, and you’ll come away with the confidence to tackle more leather sewing projects in future.

We’ll show you how to get a professional finish by exploring:

  • how to cut leather
  • bonding stabilisers
  • how to stitch leather
  • how to insert hardware such as rivets and zips
  • how to burnish the raw edge of leather (a lovely finishing technique).

You’ll also learn skills that are transferable to fabric bags, such as how to construct the base of a bag and add a zipped pocket.

How will I be taught?

You’ll be taught in our lovely studio by a friendly and experienced tutor, through demonstration and guidance as you work.

You’ll also be able to ask questions, making sure everything is clear and that you’re getting the best results you can.

Do I need any previous experience or skills?

To join this leather bag making course it’s important that you can already use a sewing machine. If you can’t, please take our Get to know your sewing machine course first.

Are materials provided? Is there anything I need to source myself?

You need to bring the fabric for the lining. It should ideally be a medium to lightweight fabric – it needs a bit of stability, to help the bag retain its structure, but nothing too thick. And you get to choose whether it’s subtle or bold, plain or patterned.

For the cross body, bucket and hobo bag: one piece, half a metre

For the tote bag: two pieces, at least L 45cm x H 50cm.

Everything else is provided: leather, tools, bag making supplies and hardware.

If you are bringing your own machine please note that we will be using teflon feet. We will have a supply of universal snap-on feet, but please check whether your machine needs a specific type of foot. Do contact us in advance if you’re unsure. One of our machines can be used if there are any issues.

What will I take home with me?

A beautiful, bespoke leather bag that you’ve made yourself. And a big smile.
