Fancy a little dressmaking… this is a great beginners make and who doesn’t need their own unique sweatshirt. The perfect summer evening throw on fit for a BBQ or at the beach.

This is a classic easy to wear garment with a flattering neckline and loose fit. You are going to wear this loads and make many, I promise!

You will be using the Linden Sweatshirt pattern from Grainline Studios.

What will we cover?

You will start the session taking some simple measurements to ensure you make the right size and fit for you. Then you’ll learn the basics of dressmaking; looking at cutting out the pattern, laying out your fabric and making sure that you cut out accurate and correctly marked pieces.

We’ll show you how to construct and finish your garment and how to attach the cuffing/ribbing.

This really is a great beginners project.

How will I be taught?

You will be taught in our light and airy inspiring studio by an experienced seamstress who will be able to share all her tips and tricks with you.

Do I need any previous experience or skills?

No previous dressmaking experience is required but it will be to your advantage to feel confident with a sewing machine.

Are materials provided? Is there anything I need to source myself?

Please bring along the correct yardage of fabric as per the chart below and matching thread.


Suggested fabrics are medium weight knits with a min of 20% stretch.  (It needs to have 2 way stretch). French terry. sweatshirt fleece, sweater knits and jersey are all good choices. Extra fabric may be need to match plaids, stripes or one way design prints.


Cuffs, bottom band and neck can all be self ribbed using your main fabric if you wish.


What will I take home with me?

You will take home your sweatshirt and the pattern plus all the knowledge that you need to make more and more and more!


Drinks and biscuits will be available but we recommend that you bring a packed lunch with you.

Mercedes was a contestant on series 5 of the Great British Sewing Bee (2019). She lives just outside Brighton with her husband Graham and their two cats, Maggie and Erica. Having worked in IT for over 20 years and serving as a reservist for 13, Mercedes has a passion for all things technical and wants to know the ins and outs and whys of everything. Mercedes enjoys utilising fabrics from all sources in her sewing projects while using traditional and developing new techniques. Minimal waste is a target with all her sewing.
