What will we cover?

You will start with an introduction and demonstration from Ellie who will show how to use the fabric paints and to mono print using plants, flowers and leaves. You can also bring in your own selections of plants to mono print with, otherwise Ellie will have a selection you can use in the class.

The second half of the class will be looking at adding more detail to your print by adding free motion embroidery. While the paint is drying we will look at this technique. Ellie will demonstrate how it works and how it can add detail to your painting and you will then work on your design. After having a practice with free motion embroidery, you will then add your design to your print. You will finish with a 25cm x 30cm original mono print picture with free motion embroidery.

How will I be taught?

You’ll be taught in our lovely studio by a friendly and experienced tutor, through demonstration and guidance as you work.

You’ll also be able to ask questions, making sure everything is clear and that you’re getting the best results you can.

Do I need any previous experience or skills?

This workshop is open to anyone with some basic experience of using a sewing machine.

Attendance of our Get To Know Your Sewing Machine workshop would be enough.

Are materials provided? Is there anything I need to source myself?

The fabric and paints will be provided in the class but if you would like to bring any images you would like to use as inspiration for the embroidery please do so, this could be wild plants, seed heads or pictures from your garden. Otherwise you can use Ellie’s images to help you.

We would recommend bringing an apron.

If you wish to bring your own machine please ensure that you are familiar with how to drop the feed dog and bring some spare bobbins. You will also need a a freemotion embroidery foot, also known as darning foot, (these will be available on the day to borrow if you do not have one). Please bring your manual if you are in any doubt.

What will I take home with me?

You will finish the session feeling refreshed & inspired, with your own piece of original textile art.

Refreshments

Drinks and biscuits will be available but we recommend that you bring a packed lunch with you.

Photography

During all of our workshops photographs are taken for promotional purposes only. Please make us aware at the time of booking if you would prefer not to be included.

Ellie Hipkin

Ellie fell in love with textile art at school and was drawn back to it after 15 years studying and working in fashion design. Inspired by the calming power of nature on the South Downs and the Sussex coastline, Ellie paints directly onto raw canvas, cottons and silks. She uses natural finds gathered on family walks - such as grasses, seed heads and feathers - to add monoprinting effects, then uses free motion embroidery to add a final layer of texture and detail. Ellie loves sharing these skills in her textile art courses. She sells her own artwork through www.elliehipkinart.com and runs Flourish Textile Art hub at www.flourish-hub.com.
