What will we cover?

In this class you will learn the basics of layering fabrics to create a tactile background  and be shown some different ways of embellishing your piece with textured embroidery stitches or a variety of yarns and trimmings.

Using pre-printed or coloured cotton fabrics each layer is treated with different embroidery stitches ranging from simple straight stitches to slightly more advanced bullion knots so this is a perfect day out for embroiderers of all skill levels. The embroidery style is a free-for-all and with a ‘no-right-or-wrong’ attitude, this is a great session to come and give hand embroidery a go.

How will I be taught?

You’ll be taught in our lovely studio by a friendly and experienced tutor, through demonstration and guidance as you work.

You’ll also be able to ask questions, making sure everything is clear and that you’re getting the best results you can.

Do I need any previous experience or skills?

This is open to embroiderers of all skills levels.

Are materials provided? Is there anything I need to source myself?

All materials are provided (12cm wooden embroidery hoop, backing fabric, pre-printed cotton fabrics, threads, trimmings) but do bring sewing tools you are comfortable with, ie: needles, threaders and fabric/embroidery scissors if you have them. If you have any fabrics or trimmings which have memories attached to them, feel free to bring these along as well and we will try to incorporate them to make your hoop that little bit more special.

What will I take home with me?

By the end of the session you will have your own unique Stitchscape.

There will be a written guide with stitches and diagrams to help you finish it off at home if needs be.

Drinks and biscuits will be available but we recommend that you bring a packed lunch with you.

During all of our workshops photographs are taken for promotional purposes only. Please make us aware at the time of booking if you would prefer not to be included.

Beth Power

Beth is an embroidery and textile artist from East Sussex who has always loved creating, sewing and playing with (or hoarding!) beautiful fabrics. Since completing a degree in Mixed Media Textiles at De Montfort University, Leicester, she has developed her own distinctive style of embroidery art using pre-printed or coloured fabrics to build up landscapes (affectionately known as Stitchscapes) which are then highly embellished with multiple forms of hand embroidery. With a free-style approach and a no-right-or-wrong attitude, her art pieces are becoming more textured and three-dimensional, with an eye for colour and patient attention to detail in every one. What started as a hobby has now turned into a flourishing embroidery business, Dotty Textiles.
