HAPPY SCRAPPY QUILT ALONG MONTH 4
This month’s block is all about half square triangles (HST). It is a good one for playing with colour as the colour placement can give the block very different looks. In our example the pink in the middle makes the windmill pattern pop. You will need 4 colours and a background colour (we have used white).

Missed the start?
STEP 1: CUTTING OUT
8 x 4.5” white squares
2 x 4.5” blue squares
2 x 4.5” green squares
2 x 4.5” yellow squares
2 x 4.5” pink squares
STEP 3: HALF SQUARE TRIANGLES
Make HSTs (using the method described in month one) using a white square with each coloured square. You should have 16 in total;
- 4 blue and white HST
- 4 green and white HST,
- 4 yellow and white HST
- 4 pink and white HST
Trim them all to 3.5”
STEP 3: PIECING
Lay the HST out in the pattern as per the photo. Feeling adventurous? Try moving the colours round to see which design you like best.
When you have the layout you want sew the HST together into rows. Press there seams of rows in alternate directions and then sew the rows together nesting the seams.

HAPPY SCRAPPY QAL NOTES
When cutting don’t forget to consider the direction of the print on your fabric if this is important to you.
All seams are sewn using a quarter inch presser foot.
A good stitch length to use is 1.8 – 2 unless otherwise stated.
As a rule all seams should be pressed towards the darkest fabric unless otherwise advised. To reduce bulky seams seam allowances can be pressed open (butterly pressed)
All blocks are 12.5″ unfinished and 12″ finished
